Managing Partner

David Tisch is the Managing Partner of BoxGroup, a New York City-based early stage investment fund. BoxGroup is an investor in over 200 seed-stage companies, including Vine, Blue Apron, Sunrise, Warby Parker, Harry’s, Oscar, Behance, Handy and more. David is also the co-founder and Chairman of Spring, a mobile marketplace where customers shop directly within the app from a curated community of brands. Spring was named by Apple as one of the Best Apps of 2014.

Origin Story: In a couple sentences, how would you describe your path to becoming an investor?

Grew up a hacker, so I could use AOL. Original power sell on eBay - baseball cards. Total internet nerd. Accidental lawyer, retired quickly. Angel investor and then started TechStars in NYC. Full time BoxGroup for over a decade.

Investment Approach: What are the key factors you consider when evaluating a founding team?

We look for ambitious and passionate teams with unique insights on an exciting market with great product sensibilities.

What's your style and approach when it comes to working with founders post-investment? What are the characteristics of founders you've worked well with?

Ask anyone we've worked with, they are our customers and ideally they say good things.

If I'm coming to pitch to you or your firm, what's the one piece of advice you'd give me?

Don't listen to what investors tell you to do.

How would you describe your own personal mission and values, and how do they impact the way you invest?

I feel very fortunate to get to work with the founders we back everyday.

What do you like best about investing in NYC, and what’s your outlook on the future of NYC tech?

NYC is my home.
